Before we jump into the nuts and bolts, there are a couple of things you should know. First, this is very similar to how I gain Twitter followers, and secondly, this will not tell you how to get more people to pin things from your website. When I get that figured out, I won't need a post because you'll hear me singing it from the rooftops.
Oh, wait, one more thing. I only spend about 15 minutes a day on Pinterest.
Following:
1. Follow 10 new people a day. No excuses.
2. Follow everyone back. Yes, everyone. If I find something offensive or that I'm truly not interested in, I just unfollow that board. Why? As long as you are following at least one board of that person you show up as a follower. The same applies when someone follows just one of your boards. I suppose if they follow one board you can just follow one back but I don't have time for that kind of monitoring.
3. Check the persons stats to see if they follow back. If they have 10,000 followers and are only following 120 people...guess what?...you're not going to get a follow back. And unlike, Twitter, where I recommend that you follow someone just because you like them I don't here. There are tools, tips, and tricks to get to the most awesome pins (some you'll find below) without following someone when you're not going to gain something in return. (FYI: when I'm selecting someone to follow who hasn't followed me, I do take a peek at their pins before I make that decision).
Pins & Boards
4. Have pretty boards. That's it. Period. How do you get pretty boards? Set the cover. Do not. I repeat. Do not just let the cover be your last pin. You could wind up with a picture of some girls boobs as the cover. Unless you want to be followed by every creepy guy on Pinterest that's not going to serve your interests.
5. Organize your boards. Keep similar boards categorized together. It makes it easy for people to find what they're looking for and come and visit you more and more.
6. Pin at least 20 pins a day.
7. Make community boards and invite people to join you. Join other community boards when they invite you. However, be selective. If it doesn't fit your interest or Pinterest style, decline the invite. I have two community boards that I invite people to and they are able to come and join the fun (DIY and Crafts and Giveaways)
Tools:
8. Repinly. By far the most useful tool. I'm sure you'll read plenty of people who have theories on it but here's why I find it useful. Trending pins. If you're going to pin something pretty why not make it the most popular pin?
9. PinAlerts. This one is a lot of fun. You add in your favorite sites and it sends you an alert (you can specify, as pinned, hourly, daily, etc.) of what other people have pinned. I love it! First, as a blogger, it allows me to see what others are interested in and secondly, as a Pinner it allows me to get to pins that I know aren't spam. Don't forget to set up your own blog for alerts!
Have Fun
10. Despite the way it may sound, I only pin things I find interesting. I don't pin things I hate for the sake of more followers. My boards are a reflection of me, my style, and an extension of my blog. They inspire, inform, and are fun, fun, fun.
Small Talk:
There are more tips I could add, but narrowed it down to my most useful. What do you find most useful for Pinterest? If you want an invite to one of my community boards, leave a comment with your Pinterest link and I'll send you an invite.
P.S. Don't forget to follow me on Pinterest...I follow back.

Happy SITS Saturday to YOU! Lots of great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLaurie
Great ideas. I really need to get more on board with Pinterest, but I tend to post things that I need.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try it out!
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for sharing these tips. Repinned to bookmark this for later. The PinAlerts is very intriguing. Happy Sharefest!
ReplyDeleteExcellent tips. You can use for both twitter and pinterest. I too only pin something if it resonates with me. Not for the sake of pinning. Having fun on Saturday Sharefest. @VMTwriter
ReplyDeleteThese are great idea - thank you!
ReplyDelete{Melinda} Thank you so much for being willing to share your "secrets". My blogging partner and I were just talking yesterday that we are failing terribly at Pinterest, but didn't know how to be a success! Appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Sharefest!
I'll have to try so of these ideas.
ReplyDeleteHi Carli,
ReplyDeletegreat tips, thanks for sharing. Already following you on Pinterest and Twitter and vice versa, be good to get an invite for your DIY and crafts board. Thanks for sharing.
Kate :)
I just followed you! I have to clearly step my game up with Pinterest and followers! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteThis post deserves a pinterest follow. You do have pretty boards.
ReplyDeletegreat post...now if only i can drag myself away from drooling over food pix on Pinterest to actually put some of these to use. ;)
ReplyDeleteStopping by via SITS,those are great tips to expand your pinterest following for sure!
ReplyDeleteWow, Carli- 400 followers in a week! I do not use Pinterest very often at all... so many social platforms to handle, it becomes overwhelming. Thanks for these tips! I do need to get better at Pinterest!
ReplyDeleteI needed this SO SO bad!!! Thank you SO much for all this info.... I am a pinterest newbie and I know I need to do something with it and you just shared exactly how and what to do. Seriously. Thank. You. :)
ReplyDeleteI am loving these tips! I do most of these, except I have never heard of Repinly! I'm going to check this out!!
ReplyDeleteI try to always follow people back, but I am bad about using Pinterest very much.
ReplyDeleteThese are great ideas. You gained in one week my total number of followers!! haha. I have to admit, Pinterest is one social media channel that I'm a bit selfish about and don't necessarily follow everyone back.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tips for Pinterest. Have you found an automated method to follow people back - similar to many Twitter tools out there that have the feature.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you about checking a person's stats. What I can't figure out is why, if someone is only following a handful of Pinners, they would have thousands of followers?
Take care and have a great weekend.
Lisa
I'mnot sure but those are the people I don't follow. I can get popular pins off repinly without taking the time to follow someone popular who isn't going to follow me back.
DeleteGreat post on Pinterest! I have just really started working on this since I linked my blog to my account. Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteLove Pinterest and love this post and I love your pins. What great insight! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove your enthusiasm! :)
DeleteThanks for the tips. I'm realizing I do some of what you spoke about already. Now, I have to be brave and start a community board.
ReplyDeleteThe community boards really help.
DeleteLots of good tips Thank You!!
ReplyDeleteWow! This was so helpful. I went through each step as I was reading, and have already gained followers! Love it! I followed you. Would love an invite to a group board :) http://pinterest.com/kastilwell/
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool! Sending you an invite to my group boards now.
DeleteGood tips. I'm still trying to figure out Pinterest and other social Media sites. I don't have a blog yet but do have business pages on FB and Twitter. I will probably do a wellness blog once I stop procrastinating. LOL I am a Massage Therapist. My Twitter is shellysparkslmt. Great blog. I will follow you on Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I follow all of my twitter followers back as well. It may not look like it though because I clean out inactive people.
DeleteI didn't know about Pin Alerts or Community Boards but I'm using both of them now. Great tips!
ReplyDeleteMy Pin Alerts hasn't worked all week and now I'm so sad!
DeleteAwesome advice! Pinterest is something I don't use as often as I should but this is some really awesome knowledge to have. Thanks for this :) Off to find more pretty pictures.
ReplyDeleteInteresting and very informative. Thank you for putting the tips together! FOllowed you :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip that you can follow only one board from someone. I've always just automatically hit "Follow all", but when I went to your boards, I saw a lot of fitness and food pins that I probably wouldn't be interested in (sorry, but not my thing). But your nail boards - that's right up my alley because I'm always looking for cool nail ideas. Good tip!
ReplyDeleteYou do have to "Follow All" first and then unfollow what you don't like. If you just follow one board first it doesn't count as a follower on your total count. Just a follower on that boards count. Make sense?
DeleteOh, and it's okay if you don't like me fitness boards. :)
DeleteI am printing this out and putting it in my planner! Great advise!
ReplyDeleteThere's a tip right there...put it on your planner!
DeleteLove the tips! I have been gaining followers at a steady pace but not as much as I guess I can. You have some great ideas. I followed you and looked at your boards and I can see some how you put your tips into practice. Thanks for the advice.
ReplyDeletegreat tips, will give them a try. thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWonderful tips. I am going to try these pronto. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Tweeted and folkowinf your boards!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tweet! I just followed everyone back this afternoon.
DeleteThank you! This was perfect timing as I have just mastered twitter and moving on to pinterest!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great article with lots of useful tips! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteChristina @ It's a Keeper
great tips!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! I'd love to have an invite to DIY and crafts! http://pinterest.com/vfynes/
ReplyDeleteDone!
DeleteGreat tips! I was a bit overwhelmed by Pinterest at first, but I find I am enjoying it more and more!
ReplyDeleteGreat points. 10-10-10 (follow, pin, repin) rules works really well. By the way, I am a programmer and love Pinterest so I developed this tool called Pinwoot (http://pinwoot.com) for Pinterest users like us to gain new followers more quickly, automatically but totally organically & safely. I have kept this tool free to use to let you all try this & gain some free followers. Hope you will find it useful. All the best. :) Alex
ReplyDeleteHi! I found this post through SITS Girls and I'm so glad I did. Thanks so much for the awesome tips. And, omg, I just followed you on Pinterest - I LOVE your boards and how you have them set up. I could seriously spend hours there pinning away (and probably will hehe). It's an excellent example to follow. I definitely have some work ahead of me to improve my Pinterest boards. I'm wondering - do you post your workouts and recipes in with the others you've pinned (that aren't yours)? Right now, I have mine split but I'm wondering if that's the best way to go. I'd love to hear your thoughts! :D
ReplyDeleteAli, you are too nice! I do put my stuff in with the others. I think just having them in with the mix is better as you're more likely to get people to look at boards that have a lot going on with a variety.
