What I Learned From Chocolate Protein Brownies

2013 is not off to the start I expected. Or wanted. Thankfully, as I'm writing this post, it's only 2012. When I wake up everything will be perfect. Like the Wizard of Oz. Minus the bad witch and flying monkeys. It'll be good to be there. At 4'10" I'm pretty sure I can snag a spot on the Lollipop Guild.

So what's a girl to do? Turn her frown upside down by baking in her big girl Easy Bake Oven. A.K.A toaster oven. Yes, I got it for free with coupons at JCP. Along with the free jeans, tshirt, and donut maker. I have no shame.

I went with protein brownies for two reasons.1. I had one scoop of chocolate protein powder left in the can. And a shake seemed to obvious. 2. If I keep instagramming donuts no one is going to believe that I am Real Into healthy eating.

How'd they turn out? Ehh But I think I know why...

The recipe that I had picked out is similar to the one Jamie Eason makes. No baby food. Gross. But it did call for unsweetened applesauce. Because that's soooo different fom baby food. ;-)

When I went to the fridge my applesauce was gone. I honestly thought it was in there. I did have low fat organic yogurt. That'll work. So I used that instead.

Life can be like that sometimes. We think something is there but it's not. You go to put on your favorite dress and it has a big stain on it. And you leave in ten minutes. That's okay. Pull out that pencil skirt and lacy blouse. You'll be fine.

Maybe the problem is bigger. Maybe you lost your job (or quite in a huff) after eleven years. What's your backup? For us, it was saving the money to pay off our student loans and not being in debt.

The brownies are decent. A little chewie for my taste but quite edible and still healthy. Your backup plan may not be as good as what you wanted. But it will work.

You see, there's a balance between going with the flow and having a plan that will keep you sane and safe. Think about your contengency plan and work for it. Living fearless doesn't mean living stupid.

If all else fails, you can just make sure there's always unsweetened applesauce in the fridge.

  1. Haha I'm glad they worked out, I never would have thought to sub in yogurt. But in all seriousness I do agree with the message of your post living fearlessly doesn't mean you can't have a back up plan and a kick ass first aid kit.

PS I don't know if I ever want to go to OZ but I think about Wonderland all the time. :)

  2. I make pumpkin spice muffins with applesauce all the time. I guess that is my healthy substitution.
