The Metric System Baffles Me #tacklethemiles

On the sixth I ran my third (yes, I said third!) virtual race of the year and I tacked Tackle the Miles . I've been oddly quiet on the subject. Why? Because I don't know the metric system. Let me explain....

On February 6th, before work no doubt, I ran my tush off. I ran so hard that I had my best pace yet. And I just know that I'm going to hit a 10 minute mile by summer. No doubt in my mind. I was feeling really great about this awesome accomplishment when I read Angela's post over at Happy Fit Mama where she explains that she didn't run too far on her 5K this time. She only ran 3.1 miles. Whatcha talkin' about Willis?

You see the whole time I was running I thought that a 5K (and why I though this at the time is beyond me) was 3.33333... Which is really stupid because how would you even measure that out on the road? So what did I do on February 6th when I ran my 5K?

Yes. I ran 3.34 miles. Because I was rounding up. Because of the infinity thing and all. Slaps hand to forehead.

But that's okay. Despite my lack of mathematical skills and/or knowledge of the metric system I ran so hard I had a pace of 13:47 which was 23 seconds faster than my pace just a few days earlier for my 5th by the 5th Race. Every second counts.

So now that I've officially embarrassed myself. And every single one of my Canadian friends. Who I wouldn't blame if they said "Carli who?" let me tell you what else is going on in Fearless land.

I'm teaching Pilates.

Oh, and not just in my mind. After Zumba class. There was kickboxing. Oh, and then Yogalates. Okay, after all of that I was talking to the owner of the facility, Gina, and I reminded her that I'm a personal trainer and I'm studying to be a Pilates instructor. Gina remembered that we had talked once before about teaching. What she didn't know was that was before I decided to be all fearless and stuff. She said that she'd like to add another class on Tuesday nights after Zumba and also on Saturday mornings. I told her that I'd teach Pilates both days. She said yes. And now I'm going to teaching actual people! The cat is thrilled that he's off the hook.

There are a few things that I need to square away but I'm thinking I should have that all done and ready to go  for her March calendar. I'll send you links and tweets once I get going in case you're in the area. :)

I'm kicking 2013s ass!

Small Talk:

How are you doing with your 2013 goals? Are you better at the metric system than me? What was the last thing you did that was outside your comfort zone?

  1. If it makes you feel any better, I live in Canada but I prefer to think in miles. My friends are obviously into metric. It is really confusing going back and forth (we won't discuss pace because I can't think in min/km and my friends can't think in miles). So no worries, you aren't the only one to get confused. Yay for your great virtual race though!

    1. Thank you so much, Leana. What's funny is I can convert CAD to USD without looking it up most days (unless their was a big change) but this distance thing is beyond me.

  2. Wow you are kicking ass on many fronts! Yay for the virtual races and way to take the bulk by the horns on the Pilates front. I bet your cat will miss you.

    1. It was hard but sometimes I'm better just jumping in.

  3. Go, Carli!! To answer your question, the last thing I did outside my comfort zone was to tell my family about Mommy In Color and that I plan on staying home full time to write. It actually was received well. BTW, this is Jennice from SITS!

    1. Wow! That would be a huge jump and change. So glad your family is supportive.

  4. I never get it either - and I lived in Europe. I just guesstimate. Constantly. That's funny about the 5k - I just press 5k on the treadmill and try not to pay attention to the miles/kilometers/whatever going by. Good luck on the 10 minute miles - just keep at it! Stopping by from SITS.

    1. My treadmill can change over from miles to kilometers but I've never figured out how to work it. Sometimes it just randomly changes.

    1. Thank you! I'm nervous because I have to memorize the routine, it's not like weight lifting where you can just take a break. It needs to be continual flow.

I wish you guys were here too! I could use the support :)

  6. Wow! That's a lot of great news! I live in Scotland now and the metric system confuses me all the time. (Stoppin' in from SITS!)

  7. Congrats girl! In answer to your questions. I am completely baffled by all systems of measurement. I mean, if anyones foot were actually 12 inches long... that is a big ass foot.

My comfort zone, why yes I left it quite recently to narrate an adoption video for my office kitties. I could ever only go on video for cats.

  8. Congrats with teaching Pilates! I'm sure you will do great! I've hit a plateau in my journey so right now I'm working towards getting over that. It's such a struggle and I HATE when the plateaus come!

  9. Congrats on running that faster pace! :) Whether you ran 3.34 or 3.1, you still got faster. And when I use my GPS on my phone for races (not the virtual kind), they are almost always over 3.1 anyways.
